Designing Online Learning

Learning Technologies and Design Competencies

Designing Online Learning

This project addresses the following competencies:

Goal 1: Design and Development of Learning Systems

Objective 1.1: Students are able to design/develop learning and performance opportunities and systems including direct instruction, constructivist learning, collaborative work, and performance support.

Objective 2.2: Students are able to design/develop learning opportunities and systems for meaningful learning; promote student engagement in online learning environments; and select appropriate technology and learning objects to support learners.

The project accomplishes this by demonstrating the design of a learning module in an appropriate technology, promoting learner engagement through the module, and creating the project collaboratively with a group of peers in the course.

Designing Online concentrated on creating meaningful outcomes for online learning and designing online lessons to support those outcomes. This was accomplished using various software tools, learning activities, and assessments. The final project was a design challenge using Google Sites to create instructional materials, learning activities, and assessments for applying Universal Design for Learning concepts and principles to course development. The site walks the learner through the three major segments of UDL, includes learning activities for each segment, and assessments as it allows them to read, understand, and apply the concepts.
